Information you’ll need to complete an online application

The following details may be needed depending on what you’re applying for and your situation.

Important information

The application starts with the eligibility test, which tells you what you may get.

Your answers in the eligibility test will be transferred into the application form.

  • If you’re not born in New Zealand:
    • your residency status
    • date you were granted your residence class visa if you have one.
  • Course details:
    • course start and end dates (you can estimate the dates and update this detail in MyStudyLink after you submit your application)
    • if you’ll be studying for a full year (a full year course takes at least 32 weeks to complete)
    • if you’ll be studying full-time
    • study break period.
  • Any benefit you get or expect to get from Work and Income while studying.
  • Any health condition you have that's likely to last at least 6 months.
  • Weekly income you’ll get while studying (if you don’t know yet, enter $0 and update this detail in MyStudyLink after you submit your application).
  • Where you’ll be living while studying.
  • If you’re under 24 and don’t have a child:
    • your parents’ details
    • your relationship with them
    • whether they live together or not
    • their combined annual income
    • whether they’re supporting other full-time students aged 16-24.
  • If you have a partner and both of you are 24 or over:
    • your partner’s personal details including:
      • their weekly income
      • any health condition.
  • If you have a child or a child you support:
    • your child’s personal details
    • your partner’s personal details, if you have one, including:
      • their weekly income
      • any health condition.

Once you’ve completed the eligibility test, you’ll only need to provide a few more details to submit an application.

  • StudyLink or Work and Income client number, if you have one.
  • Contact details.
  • If you’re not born in New Zealand:
    • date you came to New Zealand
    • date you were granted your residence class visa if you have one.
  • IRD number and tax code.
  • Bank account details.
  • If you have a partner, start date of your relationship (eg marriage or civil union).
  • Course details:
    • if your course is a fees-free level 1 or 2 foundation qualification or Youth Guarantee programme
    • student ID (if you don’t know yet, you can leave this blank and update this detail in MyStudyLink after you submit your application)
    • where you’re studying and what qualification level
    • whether you’ll be studying from home, eg distance learning.
  • Details of any tertiary study you took before 1999.
  • Income details while studying (if you don’t know yet, you can update this detail online in MyStudyLink after you submit your application).
  • Parents’ contact details.
  • Details of other full-time dependent students aged 16-24 your parents support including their date of birth, where they’ll be or will be studying.
  • Contact details of an alternative contact person
  • How much your costs will be.
