How long you can get a Student Allowance for

You can get more weeks of Student Allowance if you've had something significant happen in your life that means you haven’t been able to complete your study within your limit.

It could be that you had a serious:

• illness that put you out of action for some time (eg, glandular fever)
• accident and ended up in hospital for a while.

Or you may have other special circumstances, eg you've been in a Civil Defence emergency, like a flood or earthquake.

What you need to do

1. Apply online for a Student Allowance (if you haven’t already).
2. Fill out an Student Allowance entitlement extension limit application form
3. Get evidence of your reason (eg, a medical certificate).
4. Log in to Connect and upload your form and document.

If you've got a MyStudyLink account, you can check how many weeks you've already had a Student Allowance for, going back to 1999.

If you don't have a MyStudyLink account, or if you studied before 1999, you'll need to manually calculate how many weeks of Student Allowance you've already received.
