Pay debt from overseas

There are several ways you can repay your debt to us if you’re overseas (outside your Student Loan).

Important information

If you want make repayments to your Student Loan, you need to do this through Inland Revenue.

How to pay back your debt

You can pay online using a money transfer agency called OrbitRemit. This service is free.

  1. Create an account with OrbitRemit
  2. Enter your name and client number.
  3. Enter the amount in New Zealand dollars that you're paying.

Payments will be processed within 5 working days.

You can pay online using your Visa credit or debit card, or MasterCard. Have ready:

  • your name and client number
  • Visa or MasterCard details:
    • name of the person on the card
    • card number
    • expiry date
    • card verification number
  • the amount in New Zealand dollars you'd like to pay.
Pay online by credit or debit card

Someone living in New Zealand can make payments on your behalf, eg, a family member or friend.

Ways to pay debt in New Zealand

If they’re going to pay on your behalf regularly, contact our Collections Unit to let them know:

  • how much they’ll be paying
  • how often the payments will be made
  • when the payments will start.

We’ll only discuss your personal information with this person if you’ve filled out a form to appoint them as your agent.

Internet or telephone banking

You can make a one-off payment or regular automatic payments from an Australian bank account using internet or telephone banking. Your bank may charge you for these services.

To set up the payments use the Pay Anyone option. You need this information:

  • Account name: Work and Income Debtors Account
  • Account details: 034002 161233
  • In the 'reference' field put 'D' followed by your 9 digit client number.

You also need to contact our Collections Unit to let them know:

  • how much you’ll be paying
  • how often the payments will be made
  • when the payments will start.

Automatic payments set up at your bank

You can set up automatic payments at your bank. They may charge you for this service.

To set up the payments:

  1. download and print the Automatic Payments form
  2. fill in your bank and account details
  3. choose how often the payments will be made
  4. enter the date the payments will start
  5. in the 'reference' field put 'D' followed by your 9 digit client number
  6. take the form to your bank.

You also need to contact our Collections Unit to let us know:

  • how much you’ll be paying
  • how often the payments will be made
  • when the payments will start.

Westpac bank branches in Australia

Contact our Collections Unit and we’ll send you personalised deposit slips. You can use the deposit slips to make payments at any Westpac branch in Australia.
