Student Allowance Transfer Grant

If you have a partner or child and need help to pay living expenses during a stand-down while transferring from a Student Allowance to a benefit, we may be able to help.

What is a stand-down?

The Student Allowance Transfer Grant is paid the week after your last Student Allowance payment.

You don't have to pay it back.

To get Student Allowance Transfer Grant, you must have a partner or a child.

You also need to:

  • have been getting a Student Allowance up until your course finishes and are now going onto a benefit
  • be in hardship.

Who can't get it

You can't get it if either:

  • you and your partner have no children and are earning more than $552.22 a week before tax, or
  • you apply more than 28 days from the week after your course finishes.

You can get one week's payment of the benefit you're transferring to. This is just your benefit payment, it doesn't include other payments, for example Accommodation Supplement, Disability Allowance.

Your payment will be reduced if you:

  • earn any income during your stand-down week
  • get any emergency assistance (for example a food grant) during your stand-down week.

How you apply depends on what benefit you're transferring to from the Student Allowance.

You need to:

  • complete a Student Allowance Transfer Grant application form
  • log in to Connect and upload your form
  • tell Work and Income that you're applying for a Student Allowance Transfer Grant.

If your application's approved, we'll pay you once your Work and Income benefit has also been approved.

The Student Allowance Transfer Grant is paid the week after your last Student Allowance payment. It's to help pay your living expenses during that week, before your first benefit payment.

If your application's approved after you finish getting Student Allowance, you'll get paid once it's approved.
