Student Loan rights

If you have a question about your student loan during the year, contact us.

If you disagree

You have the right to disagree with your student loan payments and charges.

If you disagree with the payments or charges on your student loan statement, email us with 'Student Loan - General' as your topic, or call us to discuss your concerns.

If, after you have talked to us, you still disagree, you can look at submitting an objection in writing.

If we can’t resolve things for you, you can formally object by writing to us.

Writing to us

Student Loan Manager
StudyLink Student Support Centre
Private Bag 11070
Palmerston North 4442

Your letter needs to reach us within 31 days of the date you were notified of the payments or charges.

In your letter, state the reason for your objection and include:

  • what details you want investigated
  • why you think the details are incorrect
  • your Student Loan statement from Inland Revenue
  • anything else you think the student loan manager should know.

What happens next

We’ll let you know when we’ve received your letter.

The student loan manager will investigate your case and write back with a formal ruling.

When we have ruled on your objection, the student loan manager will advise Inland Revenue of our decision.

You can write to the Ministry of Social Development. You must write within 21 days of the ruling, with full details of your case.

Sent your letter to:

Ministry of Social Development
PO Box 1556
Wellington 6144

They will investigate your case and write to you with a decision.

Some cases may be taken to the Disputes Tribunal.
