Tuli Takes Flight Scholarship

25 July 2022.

The Tuli Takes Flight scholarships are being awarded for the first time this year. If you get one of these scholarships, it may affect the payments you get from us.

Background

The Government announced the Tuli Takes Flight scholarships in 2021. They are part of the goodwill gesture, to accompany the Government’s apology to Pacific families and communities impacted by the Dawn Raids.

The new scholarships are:

  • funded by the Ministry of Education, and
  • administered by the Pacific Education Foundation.

The scholarships are being awarded for the first time this year. They aim to reduce financial barriers to study for Pacific students.

How the scholarship could affect your payments

Student Allowance

This scholarship is not counted as income for Student Allowance. This means if you (or your partner) get a Student Allowance, it won't be affected by the scholarship.

Sole Parent - Accommodation Benefit

If you're a sole parent and get Accommodation Benefit, the scholarship will be counted as an asset. This means your Accommodation Benefit may be affected by the scholarship.

Other payments

If you (or your partner) get any other payments from us, the scholarship will be counted as income. This means these payments may be affected by the scholarship.

Other payments could include:

  • Accommodation Supplement
  • Disability Allowance.

Questions

If you have any questions about how the scholarship affects your payments, call us on 0800 88 99 00. We'll make sure you're getting everything you're entitled to.
